Asthma

27 05 2010

The incidence of asthma cases has increased by more than 300 percent over the last two decades and now affects an estimated 20 million Americans.

Asthma is an inflammatory condition, typically of your upper airways. Common symptoms include:

-Chest tightness

-Shortness of breath

-Wheezing

-Coughing

Asthma and Vitamin D…

Since asthma is caused by inflammation, the fact that vitamin D deficiency can aggravate the condition makes perfect sense in light of what we now know about vitamin D. As Dr. Robert Heaney explains in this Inner Circle Expert Interview, vitamin D can be a very powerful immune modulator.

And although this study may be the first to demonstrate an inverse association between circulating levels of vitamin D and markers of asthma severity, it’s not the first study to show that vitamin D can benefit asthmatics.

Even More Strategies to Safely and Effectively Treat Your Asthma

Sadly, many seem to think that serious diseases require potent (and hence potentially dangerous) drugs to be kept in check. This is not true however, and asthma is no exception. In fact, safely and effectively treating your asthma is not a complicated affair.

In addition to making sure your vitamin D levels are optimized, here are several additional strategies that can help treat the root of your problem, as well as a few that can offer safe symptom relief:

Purify your indoor air. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air is up to five times more polluted than outdoor air, on average. So, considering the fact that you spend about 90 percent of your life indoors, you may want to consider installing a good air purifier that is easy, safe, cost-effective, and leaves behind no dangerous chemical residues (which are often just as bad as the substances you’re trying to clean away.)

Consider the hygiene hypothesis – There’s a tendency in our modern culture to be obsessive about cleanliness, especially in children. However, this may not be as healthy as initially thought. It appears that being exposed to common bacterial and viral infections as a child can be instrumental in providing the stimulus to your immune system to prevent asthma naturally.

Get regular exercise – Studies have shown that asthmatics who exercise regularly tend to show improvement in:

-Maximum ventilation
-Maximal oxygen uptake
-Work capacity, and
-Maximum heart rate

Increase your intake of animal-based omega 3 fats – I can’t emphasize enough the importance of getting sufficient amounts of high quality animal-based omega 3 fats in your diet.

I strongly believe we all need plant-based omega 3 fats (and I consume some virtually every day myself, like hemp seed or flax seed), many people do not possess the metabolic machinery to rapidly convert the ALA in these plants to the higher order fats DHA and EPA, which are potent anti-inflammatories.

Although I still recommend fish oil in some instances, I believe krill oil is a superior source of omega 3 fats for most people.

Avoid all commercial milk products. They are notorious for making asthma worse. If you consume milk at all, use only raw milk products from grass-fed cows, but even then be careful and take note of whether or not the raw milk is making your asthma better or worse.

Eat foods rich in vitamin E. Much like vitamin D, higher vitamin E intake has also been associated with lower serum IgE concentrations and a lower frequency of allergen sensitization.

Try some Butterbur (Petasites hybridus). This perennial shrub has been used since ancient times to treat a variety of conditions. As far back as the 17th century, butterbur was used to treat coughs, asthma, and skin wounds. Researchers have since identified the compounds in butterbur that help reduce symptoms in asthma by inhibiting leukotrienes and histamines, which are responsible for symptom aggravation in asthma.

In one study, 40 percent of patients taking a butterbur root extract were able to reduce their intake of traditional asthma medications.

Build your immune system with allergy testing. In my experience, conventional testing does not work very effectively and there is a fair amount of risk. A far better intradermal skin test is the provocation neutralization testing.

Metabolic Typing Diet

22 05 2010

by William Wolcott and Trish Fahey

Your metabolism is unique based on hereditary reasons, and what might be working for your best friend might actually cause you to gain weight and become sick. This happens because you don’t have the same “metabolic type” as they do. You have your own biochemical makeup, no two people are alike on a biochemical or physiological level. In other words, we’re all different in the way that our bodies process foods and utilize nutrients. When you eat according to your metabolic type it will enable you to achieve and maintain your ideal weight, eliminate sugar cravings, have sustained energy and endurance, boost your immune system, and will help you conquer and overcome anxiety, depression, blood sugar imbalances, mood swings, indigestion, headaches, fatigue and allergies.

In the mid-1980’s the author (William Wolcott) heard about a group of scientists and clinicians in the U.S. who were evolving this unique system called metabolic typing. Men like William Kelley, George Watson, and Roger Williams were building upon the work from scientists and clinicians of an earlier era: Weston A. Price, Frances Pottenger, and Royal Lee.

They discovered early on that the involuntary or autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a pivotal role in determining metabolic individuality and also in influencing health and disease. The ANS is known as the master regulator of metabolism. There are two branches of the ANS, the sympathetic system also known as the “fight or flight” branch and the parasympathetic system also called the “rest and digest” branch. The sympathetic system controls bodily processes that have to do with energy utilization, and the parasympathetic system controls bodily activities that pertain to energy conservations. In most people, one branch tends to be more dominant than the other, and this creates a biochemical imbalance. So when you eat according to your metabolic type it enables you to establish a balance within the ANS.

Another thing that plays a huge part in metabolic typing is the rate at which your cells convert food into energy, this is known as the rate of cellular oxidation. This process is determined largely by heredity, and needs to be kept in balance if you want your body to function properly. So you can either be a fast oxidizer, which means your cells rapidly convert food into energy, and therefore you need to eat foods that burn slowly such as heavier proteins and fats. And on the other hand if you are a slow oxidizer you need to eat lighter foods (carbohydrates) that burn faster, if you want to maintain metabolic balance.

There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all diet! Just like we are all different externally (hair color and texture, skin color, facial features, height, weight, skeletal structure, finger prints, ex.) we are also internally different as well. So when people write diet books saying that there is only one healthy way to eat, they are failing to pay attention to the fact that not everyone has the same biological makeup.

Dr. Mercola’s ‘Nutritional Typing’ info here.

Your body responds uniquely to food — your fuel — based on your genetics, biochemical makeup, family history, and your own interaction with your environment. That’s why you will advance your health (and looks) by discerning your Nutritional Type.

The science of Nutritional Typing is the only system that customizes nutrition based on the way your body reacts to food . Your Nutritional Type determines your individual nutritional requirements and dictates your individual responses to what you eat and drink.

You see, foods and individual nutrients do not behave the same way in two people with different Nutritional Types.

That certainly explains why some healthy foods that make other people energetic (and slim) might make you unhealthy, sluggish, bloated, and heavier. And why, no matter how much you try to stick to foods you’ve been told are ‘healthy’, or even organic, you may still not feel as good as you’d like to.

There is a reason for this. It’s the result of a giant factor outside your control — your metabolism.

Then, when you factor in environmental stresses that can cause changes in your metabolism and temporarily override your genetics, your personal ‘Mission Control’ loses control — unless you know your Nutritional Type.

However, once you discern your Nutritional Type, and understand your own unique characteristics, you will start choosing foods that move you away from weight issues, disease, accelerated aging… and towards optimal health and your naturally ideal weight.

Which Type Are You?

This revised and simplified plan places you and your body into one of these three basic groups…

Protein Types operate best on a low-carbohydrate, high-protein and relatively high-fat diet (healthy fat that is). These ratios are detailed for you in your Nutritional Typing profile to help you make the wisest food choices.

Carb Types normally feel best when most of their food is carbohydrate. Yet, there are major differences between classes of carbs such as vegetables and grains. With Nutritional Typing you will discover which carbs are best for your unique physiology.

Mixed Types require food combinations somewhere between carb and protein type groups. This type requires quite a bit of fine-tuning and listening to your own body, making it the most challenging type of the Nutritional Typing types.

Whether Healthy or Experiencing Challenges — Nutritional Typing Will Enhance Your Life

5 Great Reasons to Discover Your Nutritional Type as Part of Your Healthy Lifestyle:

1) Discover what type of fuel your body really needs to operate at optimal levels

2) Reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes

3) Enhanced immunity and decreased coughs, colds and flu

4) Slowing your signs of aging

5) Get off that dieting yo-yo and achieve natural weight loss (if necessary) without dieting or restricting calories

Movie: ‘Jesus Camp’

21 05 2010

I had a very tough time watching this movie, but I’m glad I stuck it through – I’m more, and more seeing the importance of good theology (in order to avoid the atrocious theology seen in this movie)! After watching this, I seriously had to watch ‘The Ordinary Radicals‘ so I could get my mind right 🙂

‘Jesus Camp’ is about the “Kids On Fire School of Ministry,” a charismatic Christian summer camp located just outside Devils Lake, North Dakota and run by Becky Fischer and her ministry, Kids in Ministry International.

At the camp, Fischer stresses the need for children to purify themselves in order to be part of the “army of God”. She strongly believes that children need to be in the forefront of turning America toward conservative Christian values. She also feels that Christians need to focus on training kids since “the enemy” (Islam) is focused on training theirs. She refers to the Earth as “a sicko world” and wishes for Jesus’ return. In the preparation meetings before the camp begins, she asks other staff members how they should prepare for “demonic forces” that may be stirred up during camp services.

Fischer is shown preaching a sermon where she mentions Harry Potter and claims that had he existed in biblical times, he “would have been put to death”. Fischer admonishes the children—many whom are in tears—that many among them are “phonies” who curse or engage in non-evangelical behaviors with friends at school, and says “clean up your act”. As several tearful children gather around her, she pours water on their hands to be “washed in the water of [God’s] word.”

There is also a scene at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where Levi and his family go on vacation to hear its later-disgraced pastor, Ted Haggard. Levi highly admires Haggard and is thrilled to meet him. He informs Haggard that he too wants to be a pastor and has already preached sermons. Afterward, Levi, Rachael, Tory, their families and several other children take part in a Justice House of Prayer rally held by Engle in front of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Jesus Camp‘ is a 2006 American documentary film directed by Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing about a Pentecostal/charismatic summer camp for children who spend their summers learning and practicing their “prophetic gifts” and being taught that they can “take back America for Christ.” According to the distributor, it “doesn’t come with any prepackaged point of view” and tries to be “an honest and impartial depiction of one faction of the evangelical Christian community”.

‘Jesus Camp’ debuted at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival, and was sold by A&E Indie Films to Magnolia Pictures. Controversy surrounding the film was featured in several television news programs and print media articles in 2006.

On January 23, 2007, ‘Jesus Camp’ was nominated for the 2006 seventy-ninth Annual Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Documentary Feature. It lost to Davis Guggenheim and Al Gore’s ‘An Inconvenient Truth‘.

Protein Powder

21 05 2010

The very first protein source you were designed to eat as a newborn is your mother’s breast milk. Did you know that the single most important nutritional protein in breast milk is whey protein? In fact, mothers’ milk is 70% whey.

Whey protein contains all the essential amino acids. Plus it boasts the highest protein quality rating among all proteins. It is a complete protein, giving newborns a healthy start in life. From that start, you’re designed to build a strong immune system and attain a normal growth pattern.

A 1987 ‘Immunology’ journal reports that whey protein supports optimal immune system response by replenishing glutathione (GSH) levels in the blood through its critical precursor, cysteine. Intercellular levels of glutathione precursors increase when you eat native whey protein. Then glutathione is produced and stored in your cells for later use.

Glutathione (GSH) happens to be your body’s best-kept secret in the war against free radicals and the signs of aging.

Glutathione (GSH) acts as your body’s “master” antioxidant and detoxifier. It is a tri-peptide made up of the amino acids cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. Our bodies produce GSH when we have adequate amounts of these critical components. Drinking Pro-Optimal Whey with Proserum native whey protein in it ensures that you receive the highest amounts of these components.

So how does glutathione promote your good health?

-Supports your immune system. Healthier people have higher GSH levels than immune-depressed people. Lymphocytes, cells vital for your immune response, depend on GSH for proper function and replication.

-Decreases signs of aging. GSH levels drop as you age. Research shows that a tendency towards degenerative diseases and aging are related to the cells’ ability to robustly recover from oxidative insult. This ability can be determined by measuring intracellular stores of glutathione.

-Helps detoxify your liver. Your liver is your body’s major detoxifier. High concentrations of GSH locate there, to carry on biochemical detoxification. GSH detoxifies pollutants, carcinogens and poisons, like those found in fuel exhaust and cigarette smoke.

-Supports good athletic performance. Strong muscular activity generates oxy-radicals, leading to muscle fatigue and reduced athletic performance. GSH neutralizes those radicals and promotes muscular development.

As you are likely aware, I am a huge advocate of consuming raw milk products — and avoiding all pasteurized milk dairy products. Raw milk is one of the most profoundly healthy foods you can consume.

Once milk is heated (to approximately 163°), nutritional breakdown and chemical modification begin. Both of these denature the milk, and by extension, the whey proteins inside.

Pasteurizing destroys enzymes, weakens vitamins, denatures or damages fragile milk proteins, destroys vitamin B12 and B6, kills beneficial bacteria and promotes pathogens. I firmly believe that pasteurized milk is the number one cause of food allergies in this country, and is associated with a broad range of other symptoms.

What’s more, once the protein is denatured, the vital protein-bound fats are cut loose.

Even today’s most expensive whey products — isolates, ion exchange, concentrates and hydrolyzed form — are denatured by-products of cheese manufacturing that fall short of preserving the biological activity of the whey proteins. These damaged proteins leave just a slim range of proteins to contribute to your health.

*Pro-Optimal Whey: never uses cross-flow filtration, microfiltration, hydrolyzation, ion exchange, or any process that could denature the original proteins as found in pure, raw milk.

*Pro-Optimal Whey: uses Proserum Whey Protein. Proserum is a customized non-denatured, whey protein powder. It undergoes a unique pasteurization process to keep the full range of all the fragile immune balancing and restoring components of fresh raw milk.

My commitment to providing you with the finest quality whey protein — without stripping it down via heat and processing — means you get powerful and important benefits from natural whey. How about these ways to help your wellbeing?

Lactoferrin. Enhances iron absorption when needed*. Also supports immune health and optimal inflammation levels*.

Immunoglobins. Numerous immune system benefits.

Bovine Serum Albumin. Along with lactoferrin and immunoglobins, contains generous amounts of cysteine and glutamine (necessary for glutathione production).
Covalent-Bonded Cysteine. Critical precursor of the intracellular production of glutathione (GSH), your master antioxidant and detoxifier.

Active Peptides. Specialized paired amino acids that display a helpful information transfer factor effect on the immune system*. They also boost intracellular glutathione.

Growth Factors. These growth-promoting protein fractions help regenerate aged or injured cells, build and retain muscle, process energy efficiently, enhance immunity, and support healthy blood sugar and brain chemicals.

Why Does it Matter What the Cows Eat?

The milk used in Pro-Optimal Whey Protein Meal comes only from cows that graze on pesticide-free, chemical-free, natural grass pastures.

These cows are never subjected to chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, genetically modified organisms, hyper-immunizations, injected pathogens, or any bovine growth hormones — giving you peace of mind in addition to wellness.

Plus, these cows are not from factory farms that feed their cows grains. Grain-feeding can transform healthy milk proteins into allergens and carcinogens — which is caused by modern feeding methods that substitute high-protein, soy-based feeds for fresh green grass.

Grass fed cows’ milk has excellent levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is transferred to you in the whey powder.

CLA may be one of the most potent antioxidant substances in your diet. Additionally, it supports healthy weight, normal immune function, and helps promote normal insulin and cholesterol levels.

Agricultural Research dairy scientist Larry Satter, based at the Dairy Forage Research Center in Madison, Wisconsin, conducted a study comparing the amount of CLA in milk from cows grazing on pasture to the amount from cows fed hay or silage.

Astoundingly, he concluded that pasture-grazed cows had 500% more CLA in their milk than cows fed silage.

So Pro-Optimal Whey, via grass-fed milking cows, provides you with a terrific source of CLA. Which is a great thing…because CLA can’t be produced by your body. Instead you must get it through foods like whole milk, butter, beef and lamb.

Description of the 5 views of hell

A Biblical description of hell / hades

‘The Narrow Gate’ (Luke 13:22-30)

Shane Claiborne talks about hell

“I figure anytime you are about to talk about hell it’s good to start with a joke, so here we go?.It was a busy day in heaven as folks waited in line at the pearly gates. Peter stood as gatekeeper checking each newcomer’s name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. But there was some confusion, as the numbers were not adding up. Heaven was a little overcrowded, and a bunch of folks were unaccounted for. So some of the angels were sent on a mission to investigate things. And it was not long before two of them returned, “We found the problem,” they said. “Jesus is out back, lifting people up over the gate.””

Brian McLaren talks about hell

“I am not embracing a traditional universalist position, but I am trying to raise the question, When God created the universe, did he have two purposes in mind – one being to create some people who would forever enjoy blessing and mercy, and another to create a group who would forever suffer torment, torture, and punishment? What is our view of God? A God who plans torture? A God who has an essential, eternal quality of hatred? Is God love, or is God love and hate?”

Good book about this topic ‘Four Views on Hell
